Grades can be calculated using simple percentages or weighted averages depending on your course grading system.
Simple Average: Grade = (Total Points Earned / Total Points Possible) × 100
Weighted Average: Final Grade = Σ(Assignment Score × Weight) / Σ(Weights)
Required Final Score: Required = (Target - Current × (100 - Final Weight) / 100) / (Final Weight / 100)
For simple grades: (Points Earned / Total Points) × 100. For weighted grades: each assignment's percentage is multiplied by its weight, then all weighted values are summed and divided by total weight.
Use the 'What Do I Need on My Final?' mode in the calculator. Enter your current grade (e.g., 85%), the weight of your final exam as a percentage (e.g., 30% of total grade), and your target grade (e.g., 90% for an A). The calculator will show exactly what score you need on the final exam to achieve your desired grade.
An 85% is a B grade according to the standard grading scale (80-89% = B). Grade scales may vary by institution.
Simple average treats all assignments equally. Weighted average assigns different importance (weight) to each assignment. Use weighted if your syllabus specifies different weights for exams, quizzes, and homework.
