Mathematical formulas and conversion methods for length units. All formulas follow BIPM SI unit definitions and NIST standards.
Length conversions use fixed multiplication factors. All metric conversions are exact powers of 10. The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm by international agreement (1959 international yard and pound agreement).
Meters → Feet
× 3.28084
1 m = 3.280839895... ft
Feet → Meters
× 0.3048 (exact)
defined exactly
Inches → CM
× 2.54 (exact)
defined exactly
KM → Miles
× 0.621371
1 km = 0.6213711... mi
Miles → KM
× 1.60934
1 mi = 1.609344... km
Confusing Mass vs Weight
Mass (kg, g) measures amount of matter. Weight is gravitational force (Newtons). In everyday use, 'weight' in kg or lbs actually refers to mass — an astronaut has the same mass on the Moon but different weight.
US vs UK Gallons and Pints
The US gallon (3.785 L) is NOT the same as the UK Imperial gallon (4.546 L) — a 20% difference. UK pint = 568 mL; US pint = 473 mL. This causes errors when following international recipes or fuel calculations.
Temperature Scale Confusion
Celsius and Fahrenheit use different zero points and scales, so you cannot use a simple multiplication factor. Always use the full formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Never just multiply °C by 1.8.
Rounding Too Early in Multi-Step Conversions
When converting through an intermediate unit (e.g., inches → cm → mm), keep full precision at each step. Rounding intermediate results compounds errors. Always round only the final answer.
Binary vs Decimal Data Prefixes
1 kilobyte (KB) in computing = 1,024 bytes (binary), but hard drive specs use 1 KB = 1,000 bytes (decimal). This is why a '500 GB' hard drive shows as ~465 GB in Windows. Both definitions are technically valid in different contexts.

All calculations are performed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No values you enter are transmitted to any server or stored anywhere. Conversion factors labelled "exact" are defined as such by the referenced standards (e.g., 1 inch = exactly 2.54 cm per the 1959 international yard and pound agreement; 1 foot = exactly 0.3048 m).
1 meter equals exactly 3.28084 feet. To convert meters to feet, multiply the meter value by 3.28084. Example: 5 meters = 16.4042 feet.
Use the formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Example: 20°C = 68°F. Water freezes at 0°C (32°F) and boils at 100°C (212°F).
Use the formula: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Example: 98.6°F equals about 37°C.
1 kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds. Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 to convert to pounds.
1 kilometer equals 0.621371 miles. A quick estimate is multiplying km by 0.6.
1 liter equals 4.22675 US cups. A metric cup is 250 mL, giving exactly 4 metric cups per liter.
1 centimeter equals 0.393701 inches. One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters.
1 liter equals 0.264172 US gallons. 1 US gallon equals 3.78541 liters.
Mass is the amount of matter in an object (kg), while weight is the force of gravity acting on that mass.
